ABOUT ME

My name is Antoni Murcia. I love to paddle in the Sea of Cortes. In 2011, Alvaro, a baja fisherman nicknamed me “Toni de Baja”.

I am originally from Barcelona, in the mediterranean sea. As I kid I loved to snorkel in the beaches of Costa Brava, in the mediterranean sea. There weren’t too many fishes left among the thousands of tourists in the beach, but I loved it nonetheless.

As many kids my age, I spent all thursday afternoons glued to my Black and White TV screen, watching Cousteau’s “Odyssey” or Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente’s “El hombre y la Tierra”

I loved biology but got discouraged because there weren't many job opportunities for biologists in Spain in the 90s. So, since I also liked tinkering with mechanical inventions, I studied engineering.

Years passed, and my interest in marine life did not wane. On some occasions I regretted not having chosen to be a biologist. But in the end, if you have a true passion, all roads lead to Rome.

I got an engineering job that allowed me to travel to San Diego, some years later. As soon as I landed here, I visited the Sea of Cortes, in Baja California, and my mind was blown. Instead of tourists, I was surrounded by creatures I could only imagine seeing in my wildest dreams: sharks, flying rays, dolphins, whales!

So I took what I had, and made the best of it. My Biology passion pushed me to explore further. My engineering skills allowed me to create custom gear, like miniature solar panel powered desalinators. I learnt kayaking and videography and I started to explore.

In this page I will share with you the adventures I have had over many years, the techniques, places and animals I have met in this living sea.

Occasionally I present this material at schools or corporations. If you are interested in scheduling an event, please contact me at my e-mail antoni.murcia@gmail.com antoni.murcia@gmail.com
